The erosion of media independence in India extended beyond biased coverage and non-engagement with critical voices. Practices such as selective licensing and the acquisition of independent media networks by individuals affiliated with the Modi government further compromised the diversity of voices in the media landscape.

Independent outlets that dare to challenge the government’s narrative often faced harassment and intimidation.

The Delhi Police on Tuesday, 3 October, 2023 conducted raids on 30 locations, including the residence of journalists, in connection with a probe into the funding of news portal NewsClick.

The raids reportedly took place in the residences of NewsClick Editor Prabir Purkayastha, journalist Abhisar Sharma, political commentator and senior journalist Aunindyo Chakravarty, veteran journalist Paranjoy Guha Thakurta, Bhasha Singh, and Urmilesh.

The Union government directed YouTube to remove National Dastak’s, Article 19 and Bolta Hindustan channels from its platform without stating any reason for such closure.

In a concerning incident, the Indian offices of the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) were raided in February 2023, immediately after the news organization released a documentary on Modi government.

India witnessed the enactment of some of its most significant laws and political decisions without meaningful parliamentary consultation and amid opposition protests.  These decisions included the sudden imposition of a national lockdown with just four hours’ notice, the controversial demonetization move, and the introduction of farm laws and transportation law.

But, the Judiciary, of late, stick to its independence in some cases.  But the Executive was adamant and continue to have its own ways to dictate the judiciary.  The media monitored to focus on the Executive, its leader, government policies and programmes.

No space was rendered to the voices of the opposition fearing the government onslaught. Institutions captured, to witch-hunt the opposition leaders and parties to join the ruling dispensation or to support its leader.  Leadership cult, character building and worship became order of the day.

Modi built a new parliament building representing a cow-head shape, prophesied to be a good omen to his future prospects of becoming Prime Minister again and again.  But it leaked when it rained heavily.  He did become the Prime Minister for the third time, on the crutches of Naidu and Nitish.

BJP boasts to bring new culture but end in worst stature.  BJP, the Party with no difference.  In the elections held in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh EVM scam alleged and about 15,000 complaints were filed with Election Commission of India from Madhya Pradesh alone. Supreme Court of India was approached for hearing the scam complaints and the High Courts of Madhya Pradesh was directed to look into the complaints and deliver judgements within two months. 

It was alleged that the EVMs were showing ninety percentage battery charge intact even after hours of use.  Postal ballots did give edge to Congress but EVMs results shown reprehensible results.  Why EVMs were brought from Gujarat State? What had happened to the nineteen lakhs stolen EVMS?  About 6.5 lakhs VVPAT machine were stated to be non-functional or faulty.  All these questions have no answers.

In the past all the petitions filed in the Supreme Court of India were dismissed on the grounds that the petitioners of were not from the aggrieved parties.  The Election Commission of India filed an affidavit in the Supreme Court that the EVMs were hundred per cent manipulation free.  But the Election Commission refused to give EVMs to the experts to prove them that the EVMs could be manipulated.  

All these apprehensions ought to be answered by the Election Commission of India.  A scam in disguise seems to have played by corporate lobby and Indian agents.  The INDIA alliance at their fourth meeting held on 19th December, 2023 passed a resolution that the VVPATS be counted.

Experts and NGOs suggested that there was no need to replace the EVMs but slips could be lengthened, print visibility be ensured for a longer time.  The slips be handed over to the voters and dropped in the ballot boxes for counting them.  It required no approval of the Parliament and the Election Commission could do it.  Counting machines could also be placed alongside the ballot boxes.

The voter would press the button before dropping the ballot in the ballot box.  This feature might be taken as a first voting trends before actual counting of VVPATS slips.

On 5th December, 2023 Narender Mishra of Madhya Pradesh filed a writ petition in the Supreme Court of India stating that the Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh and Prime Minister had violated the election code and the Election Commission of India did not take any action.  The Supreme Court of India directed the Madhya Pradesh High Court to take up the issue along with the complaints of Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh.

Narender Mishra filed another application before the Election Commission of India and the Supreme Court that the voter data published by the Commission was faulty.  On 30 January, 2024 EAS, Sarma, former Secretary to the Government of India, wrote to the Election Commission of India that there was a conflict of interest in the appointment independent directors affiliated to the Bhartiya Janata Party on the Board of the Bharat Electronics Limited.

The Independent Directors were Mansukhbhai Shamjibhai Khachariya, Dr Shivnath Yadav, Shyama Singh, and PV Parthasarathi.  He wrote the letter eleven months backs also.  The Commission did not respond to his letters.  Sarma further said that the Companies Act mandates that an independent Director should play a pivotal role in managing the affairs of the company.

On 24 January, 2024, Digvijay Singh carried out a demo of how EVMs could be manipulated.  Atul Patel, a technical expert, demonstrated the manipulation in the presence of the media.  The Congress MP Jairam Ramesh wrote to the Election Commission to ensure the safety of the EVMs.

The Commission assured him that EVMs would comply with the legal framework and jurisprudence.  On 19 August 2023, a group of former civil servants wrote to the Election Commission of India, urging it to maintain the sanctity of the electoral process and safeguarding democracy.

Supreme Court advocates Mahmood Pracha and Bhanu Pratap requested the Commission to hand over 50 ‘sealed’ electronic voting machines to them so that the lawyers might take them to each state capital to prove their vulnerabilities.

Later they demonstrated how the EVMs could be manipulated.  On 5th January, 2024, they led a march pressing their demands. They were detained and arrested by Delhi police.  On 15th December, Samajwadi Party President Akhilesh Yadav advocated against the machines.

Subramanian Swamy, perennial critique of Narendra Modi emphatically said that the EVMs would not be manipulated. But he failed to grasp the politics of Narendra Modi.

The facts enumerated about reveal that BJP is not a Party with a difference but it is a Party no difference.  It is dominated by Congress infiltrators and corrupt leaders of other parties flocked to escape from corruption cases or restless leaders seeking green pastures under Narendra Modi regime.

In the 2024 general elections, Modi for the first time faced a rout, when he could only get less than the majority seats of 240 and standing the support system of Chandra Babu Naidu and Nitish Kumar.  Modi himself declared that he is not person to change.  He proved when he allocated the same portfolios to the same Ministers who had been there in the last government.

He did not agree to change the Speaker, when he thrust upon the Parliament Om Birla again.  He had also declared that whatever that had happened during his earlier regimes was a tip of the ice berg and real happenings yet to take place sooner or later, reveals his egoistic intentions and tendencies.  By declaring so, he had not only frightened the people of India but also challenged the opposition.
