Chandra Babu Naidu, the prodigal son of Andhra Pradesh began his career stuffed with the negative personality traits from his college days in Sri Venkateswara University, Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh. He contested election for the President of the Students’ Union in 1973-74. He was not a popular figure and had decided to win the election by hook or crook. It was alleged that he had kidnapped his opponent and kept him in captivity to win the elections and he won.

His tryst with politics began with the Congress Party. He contested as an MLA from Chandragiri Constituency in 1978. To his dismay he was victorious. He became the cinematography minister in the T Anjaiah government. He life took a topsy turvy turn when he met N T Rama Rao, the legend of Telugu cinema.


In 1980, Naidu married NTR’s daughter Bhuvaneshwari. NTR founded the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) in March 1982 and came to power in Andhra Pradesh in 1983. But Chandra Babu lost Chandragiri to the TDP candidate in the election storm that engulfed Andhra Pradesh.


He once boasted that he would contest against NTR in the next election and defeat him. Nevertheless, his negative mind had ordered him otherwise. His wife was used as a tool to seek NTR’s consent to sneak into the Party. The result was that he joined Telugu Desam Party.


NTR agreed to grant him an asylum who thought that his experience would be beneficial to the Party and the Government. He was made the General Secretary of the Party. NTR further awarded him with important portfolios like Revenue, Finance and Power in the government thinking that he would reform himself and the Party, which was not to be.

Murder of noted journalist Pingali Dasarath Ram

Pingali Dasarath Ram was the Editor of a fortnightly Magazine, Encounter.  He was fiercely writing against NTR, his ways and governance.   In 1985, he was brutally murdered while he was going to the Railway Station in an auto rickshaw.  It was alleged the involvement of Chandra Babu Naidu, the prodigal son of Andhra Pradesh to please NTR.

The NTR family thought that Lakshmi Parvathi would grab the properties and charisma of NTR and might take over the Chief Ministership of Andhra Pradesh and the family would be become orphans. The antithesis concept was dumped into ears and minds of the entire family of NTR. The fear psychosis griped the family and they, not foreseeing the catastrophe that would be fall on them. Chandra Babu Naidu, the prodigal son of Andhra Pradesh would become a de facto dictator of the Party and Government. No body from the family of NTR have guts to claim the legacy of the Party fearing Chandra Babu Naidu, and his personality known for physical elimination and intimidation.


On one evening August 24, 1995, Hotel Viceroy agog with activity where Chandra Babu Naidu, the prodigal son of Andhra Pradesh gathered more than 140 MLAs had an impromptu meeting and hatched a conspiracy to dethrone NTR as the leader of the Telugu Desam Legislature Party and elect Chandrababu Naidu as a new leader.


Daggubati Venkateshwara Rao once in harmony with NTR deserted him, proposed Chandra Babu Naidu, the prodigal son of Andhra Pradesh. Ashok Gajapathi Raju seconded. The TDLP resolution was faxed to Governor K Krishna Kant on the same night.
On August 25 early morning 3 am, NTR uncovered the plot hatched by the TDP MLAs and the election of Naidu as a new leader. He immediately convened a Cabinet meeting early in the morning, but only a few ministers could attend it.


It was alleged that money power was behind some of the MLAs to flock to Chandra Babu Naidu. The NTR cabinet passed a resolution in which N Chandrababu Naidu, T Devender Goud, K Vidyadhar Rao, P Ashok Gajapathi Raju and A Madhava Reddy were sacked from their posts. It also passed another resolution dissolving the State Legislative Assembly by deciding to go in for a fresh election.


NTR also wrote a separate letter to the Assembly Speaker Yanamala Ramakrishnudu stating that all the five ministers were expelled from the Telugu Desam Legislature Party (TDLP) and from the primary membership of the Party. Yanamala also betrayed NTR.
Later, NTR straightaway drove to Raj Bhavan at 7.45 am to hand over the Cabinet resolutions to the Governor. But he was shocked to know that Naidu had already handed over to the Governor half an hour before, a TDLP resolution, which removed NTR and elected Naidu as the TDLP leader.  Vidyadhar Rao and Ashok Gajapathi Raju also met the Governor and gave a letter requesting the Governor to invite Naidu to form the new government.


A furious NTR decided to go on a state-wide tour along with Lakshmi Parvathi on his Chaitanya Ratham in the afternoon. Knowing that, Chandra Babu Naidu, the prodigal son of Andhra Pradesh camping with gang of supporters, he stopped at the entry gates of Hotel Viceroy, Secunderabad.


A high voltage drama took place at the hotel. NTR and his group of MLAs tried to storm into the hotel premises, but the security forces did not allow them to get in.


NTR, standing atop the Chaitanya Ratham, was requesting his MLAs to not to fall prey to Chandra Babu Naidu and to desert him while some of his followers including the MLAs clashed with the police. The rest is history. Chandrababu Naidu defended the coup d’état saying that he was forced to act to rescue the Party and the family from Lakshmi Parvathi.

Murder of Vangaveeti Radha in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh

Vangaveeti Radha, was a popular leader from the Kapu community, Andhra Pradesh. He was sitting on a hunger strike in Vijayawada. In the early hours of December, 26, 1988, a group of people disguised as devotees arrived in a bus, threw smoke bombs at the site. Ranga was brutally murdered.


It was alleged the hand of Chandra Babu Naidu, the prodigal son of Andhra Pradesh in the murder. The murder led to riots in Vijayawada and Guntur towns where 41 deaths occurred in Police firing.

Madhav Reddy joined NTR’s Telugu Desam Party in 1984. He was a Minister in NTR’s Cabinet. He was hand in glove in with Chandra Babu Naidu when he dethroned NTR in 1995.


During his home ministership, Reddy was out spoken against the Naxalite–Maoist insurgency. He reimposed ban on the People’s War Group which had been lifted by NTR.


On the night of March 7, 2000 members of the People’s War Group, an out lawed Naxal outfit, blasted off him to death at a newly constructed railroad crossing near Ghatkesar, near Hyderabad.

The security protocol of Reddy was found to be inadequately enforced. The government did not take any action against the officials responsible for his security. The inquiry Report was also not made public. It was alleged that Chandra Babu was behind the blast. It was hypothesized that Madhava Reddy had sneaked into the personal life of Chandra Babu Naidu.

The crushing of Farmers’ agitation by Chandra Babu Naidu, the prodigal son of Andhra Pradesh

The Chandrababu Naidu government’s attempt to crush the farmers’ agitation against the power tariff hike in Hyderabad was turned into a tragedy. On 28th August, 2000, a brutal police firing and lathi charge was ordered on the protestors demonstrating against the steep revision in power tariffs.

The massacre of wood cutters by the regime of Chandra Babu Naidu, the prodigal son of Andhra Pradesh

On 7 April 2015, the Police shot twenty suspected woodcutters, alleged to be red sandal wood smugglers in the Seshachalam forest in Chittoor District, Andhra Pradeesh. The then Anti-Smuggling Task Force DIG Kantha Rao said that the smugglers had attacked the police team with sickles, rods and axes.


Human rights activists did not believe the police version of the shooting. They said that some of the bodies had burnt marks and others had bullet injuries in the chest and head. Witnesses said that some of those killed were pulled out of a bus by the policemen.

A bloody stampede at Maha Pushkara bath ceremony in River Godavari

On 14 July, 2015, a stampede took place in Rajahmundry, in River Godavari on the border of the twin states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.  Twenty-seven devotees were dead in the stampede and another 29 injured.

Many gates were closed for the Chief Minister to complete a photo-shoot event there. When he had left, the gates were let loose. A huge awaiting crowd rushed to the spot of bath when the stampede occurred.

Telugu Desam Party workers suffocated to die in the meeting of Chandra Babu Naidu, the prodigal son of Andhra Pradesh

On December 28, 2023 at a Public meeting at Kandukur in Nellore district of Andhra Pradesh, Telugu Desam Party President Nara Chandrababu Naidu’s meeting, a tragedy struck when eight people died after slipping and falling into a drain in a stampede at an overcrowded venue. Four were injured, and the condition of two of them were critically injured.


The venue was a death trap with people over loaded to listen to Chandra Babu Naidu, the prodigal son of Andhra Pradesh who was to speak on the “Idemi Kharmara” programme. He ended his speech and visited the hospital where the victims had been taken for treatment.


He announced ex-gratia of ₹10 lakh to the kin of each of the deceased and said that his party would shoulder the responsibility of their children’s education.

Another stampede at Chandra Babu’s gift distribution function

On Sunday, January 1, 2023, three women were killed and several others injured near Amaravati in Andhra Pradesh during a stampede at a Telugu Desam Party gift-distribution programme.


According to Police, it happened when the organisers started distributing gifts, sarees etc. The crowd swelled and pushed by throwing away the barricades leading to the stampede.


Naidu expressed shock and grief over the tragedy and announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs 5 lakh each to the kin of the deceased.

His hands are now full with six cases filed so far and how many more could be filed in near future would only be known to him since he knows the scams, he has indulged in.

Case One: Sand Policy withdrawal

A complaint was made by the Director of AP Mines and Geology Department that Chandra Babu Naidu and two of his erstwhile Ministers namely Peethala Sujatha and Devineni Uma Maheshwar Rao and ex-MLA Chintamaneti Prabhkar were indulged in scandal in the Sand Policy.


Chandra Babu government rescinded the Sand Policy resulting in the loss to exchequer and profit to the TDP leaders.


The Crime Investigation Department registered an FIR and a notice was issued to Chandra Babu and others involved. A case was filed in the Court.

Case Two: Distilleries & Breweries scandal

The Commissioner of Distilleries and Breweries, AP and the Managing Director of State Breweries’ Corporation, AP made a complaint against Chandra Babu Naidu that he manipulated the State Liquor Policy to benefit the distilleries and breweries.

 The AP CID registered an FIR. A case was filed in the Court.

Case Three: The Skill Development Scandal

An MOU was signed between Siemens India Ltd., and the AP State Skill Development Corporation worth Rs. 3356 crores during the tenure of the government of Chandra Babu Naidu which was not there.


A stake of 10 percent of the project amount to Rs. 372 crores were released to Siemens, which it denied.


An FIR was registered and a case registered. Chandra Babu was arrested on various charges of criminal conspiracy, cheating, forgery and corruption. He is on bail now in this case.

Case Four: The Angallu Riots & Un-lawful meeting

Uma Parthi Reddy, Chairman, Angallu Market Committee filed a complaint that Chandra Babu Naidu and others had forcibly conducted a meeting in Angallu Village, Annamaiah District which resulted in riots and violence.


An FIR was registered and a case filed in the Court.

Case Five: The Amaravati Inner Ring Road Scandal

The CID registered and filed a case in the Court against Chandra Babu Naidu, his son Lokesh Naidu and a former Minister P. Narayana.


It was alleged that they had conspired to shaffle the alignment of the Amaravati Inner Ring to benefit a real estate Company, the Lingameneni Estates.

Case Six: AP Fibernet irregularities in tender process

The CID had registered and filed a case against Chandra Babu Naidu and 19 others for irregularities in tender process and execution of the AP Fibernet Project.

The tender worth Rs. 321 crore was awarded to a black listed company Tera Software.


The CID alleged a criminal breach of trust, cheating and forgery.

The epilogue on Chandra Babu Naidu, the prodigal son of Andhra Pradesh.

He tenure saw many murders, mishaps, stampedes, shootings etc.


The political life of Chandra Babu Naidu had been for power, blackmailing, intimidation, cheating, corruption, amass of wealth and elimination of critics and opponents. NTR accused him of betrayal, conspiracy and fueling fire in the family.


He sneaked into NTR’s life as a refugee and turned himself into an apogee in the Party to dethrone NTR from the government and the Party.


He was responsible for the death of NTR heart-broken but heart stricken. He proved himself not a pride son in law of NTR but a prodigal son of Andhra Pradesh.


NTR, a towering personality of Andhra Pradesh, a heart-throb of Telugu people desired to become a permanent PM, that is, a People’s Man.


NTR passed away on 18th January, 1996 disheartened and deserted by his family and back stabbed by Chandra Babu Naidu, the prodigal son of Andhra Pradesh.
